Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik is accepting proposals for scientific seminars/workshops in all areas of computer science, in particular also in connection with other fields. We welcome your proposal for a Dagstuhl Seminar or Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop (hereinafter both referred to as seminar) before the submissions portal closes on April 15, 2018.
Seminar Format
A Dagstuhl Seminar discusses new and ongoing research, whereas a Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop reflects on the current state of an area to develop a vision for the future. Dagstuhl Seminars in the past have been instrumental in developing new directions and fields and are especially well suited for young ideas that have not yet found an established venue. We particularly welcome topics that span several subject areas, are interdisciplinary, and/or are relevant to industry.
More information about Dagstuhl Seminars and Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops is available at:
Organizer Team
A seminar is organized by a maximum of four outstanding researchers of different affiliations. The organizer team should represent a range of research communities and reflect Dagstuhl's international orientation. Proposals covering topics with a strong research presence in a specific geographical region (Europe, Americas, Asia) should include an organizer from that region if possible. Likewise, industry-relevant seminars would greatly benefit from an organizer who is active in industry. In general, we encourage you to put together a balanced organizer team that represents the top researchers in their scientific communities. A great emphasis is on diversity, especially with regards to gender.
Including two or more than two organizers with the same affiliation, requires a clear scientific justification in your proposal and is subject to change by the Scientific Directorate.
Seminar Size and Duration
You may apply for a seminar with 30 or 45 participants. In either case, please specify whether your proposed seminar is for 3 or 5 days. Short 3-day seminars with 45 participants are uncommon as they could complicate the group dynamics.
Scheduling Options
Seminars with up to 30 participants are likely to be scheduled between August 2018 and February 2019, and those with up to 45 participants between January 2019 and August 2019. If you propose a date outside of these general periods please give us your reasons for doing so.
Proposal Guidelines and Submission
For a proposal to be successful it needs to convince the reviewers that
- it concerns an interesting and pertinent topic (possibly connecting different fields inside and outside computer science);
- it is submitted by the right set of organizers; and
- it states an appropriate and realistic collection of participants.
Dagstuhl's capacity has been increasingly allocated to series (defined as three or more seminars focused on the same topic and community), which leaves us with less freedom to support emergent topics or those that bring together diverse communities. For this reason, we ask that proposers of seminars forming part of a series give evidence of the success of prior seminars in the series and provide good reasons as to why it merits continuation.
A typical proposal is less than ten pages long, organizer CVs included. Please submit your application electronically via the dedicated web interface DOSA. To submit, you will need to enter the metadata into DOSA and upload the proposal as a single PDF file plus the invitee list as a CSV file. You can learn more about the submission process on the following web pages:
- Guidelines: http://www.dagstuhl.de/seminars/proposal
- Submission portal: http://www.dagstuhl.de/dosa/ (Submission from March 30, 2018 to April 15, 2018)
Seminars with up to 30 participants are likely to be scheduled between February 2019 and August 2019, and those with up to 45 participants between September 2019 and March 2020. If you propose a date outside of these general periods please give us your reasons for doing so. Both preferred and block-out dates for your seminar can be entered within DOSA. If your proposal is accepted, we will try to schedule the seminar on one of your preferred dates but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so. In general, we do respect your block-out dates.
Proposal review and selection
Proposals will be reviewed by our Scientific Directorate by end of June 2018, and notifications will likely be sent out in July 2018.
