Motivation

As the amount of data generated by humanity continues to grow, seemingly without bound, innovating new systems to store, organize and query the information grows more important. Database management systems have a rich history of academic research and successful technology transfer to a wide range of commercial and industrial applications. This Dagstuhl Seminar will 1) advance the state of the art in data management by bringing together academic researchers and industrial practitioners and 2) help train the new generation of students to innovate in these areas.

Collaborations started in past similar Dagstuhl Seminars have resulted in conference publications, theses, and industrial technology transfers. We have previously focused on robust performance ("good performance every time") in general settings (10381, 12321), specifically for database query processing (17222) and subject to the unique challenges of cloud computing (24101). In this seminar, we plan on focusing on the challenges and opportunities of latency-sensitive stream processing such as event streams and time series, and the underlying technical challenges such as ingestion, consistency checking, indexing, alerting, and incremental maintenance of materialized views.

Previous seminars focused on robustness in processing once data were appropriately organized. This seminar will explicitly explore the interplay between organizing and querying that data concurrently in the context of dynamic streaming systems.
