Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops

Please find the information on the Composition of a Proposal, the Proposal Submission and Review Process, and the Infos for Organizers for Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops on the respective pages for Dagstuhl Seminars. They have been collected there due to the strong similarities between the almost identical proposal processes and administrative preparation processes of Dagstuhl Seminars and Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops.

Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops – An Overview

Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops are intended to complement the Dagstuhl Seminar Program. They are oriented towards the future, trying to identify new goals, fields, and applications of computer science. In contrast to Dagstuhl Seminars, they are not aimed at producing new research results but they reflect on the state of a field, identify strengths and weaknesses, determine promising new developments and relevant new problems, and seek synergies between different fields.

For examples, see the list of past and future Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops in the Seminar Calendar.

Overview

  • Participants: about 25
  • Duration: 3 or 5 days (typically 5)
  • Fee: 180€ to 300€
  • Applications: April 15 and November 1
  • Allocation: in 9 to 15 months
  • Approval: Scientific Directorate

Differences to Dagstuhl Seminars

  • Small group of leading researchers
  • Focus is on the research area, not on the recent results of the participants
  • Goal is positioning of the research area and visions for the future
  • Result is a manifesto, in addition to the report

Concept

Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops are to reflect on the state of a field, identify strengths and weaknesses, determine promising new developments and relevant new problems, and seek synergies between different fields. The scope of Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops includes reflections on the state of individual or overlapping fields.

Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops are led by a small group of established leaders in their field. They assemble about 28 participants of international standing to discuss thoroughly for 3 to 5 days the status quo and the future direction of a field in computer science. Compared with Dagstuhl Seminars, a Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop rather involves senior researchers with a focus on strategy.

Objectives

Guided by their extensive experience, participants of the workshop analyze the status quo of a field and jointly develop a vision for its future. This may entail, for example:

  • identifying strengths and shortcomings of a field,
  • identifying development perspectives for a field,
  • locating synergies between fields,
  • encouraging concentrations,
  • providing suggestions for research projects,
  • prompting Dagstuhl Seminars to explore directions,
  • opening existing research fields for beneficial and valuable applications, or
  • triggering innovations.

How the Workshops Are Conducted

At Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops, discussion takes front stage. In contrast to Dagstuhl Seminars, which focus on recent research results and ideas, the focus is on presenting and discussing views on and strategies for the future development of the field. Discussion is most productive when the number of participants is limited to not more than 28 of a field's international elite.

Results

The distinguishing result from a Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop is a Dagstuhl Manifesto. Such a manifesto should include research directions that are put into a larger context, like its relevance for society and economy, applications, and relations to other fields. Its audience goes beyond the inner circle of experts and should include policy makers. Once a manifesto is accepted by Dagstuhl's Scientific Directorate, it will be published in the series Dagstuhl Manifestos.

In addition to the Manifesto, a Dagstuhl Report to be published in the periodical Dagstuhl Reports has to be compiled as well.

Proposing and Organizing a Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop

If you would like to organize a Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop you should submit a proposal. The proposal will be reviewed by Dagstuhl's Scientific Directorate and once your proposal is approved, our staff will help you to organize the workshop. For details on the format and required content of a proposal and on the proposal process, please refer to Information for Submitting Proposals.

In case your proposal is approved, take a look at our list of things to know for organizers.

Participation

To guarantee a high scientific standard of the Dagstuhl Perspective Workshops, a list of possible participants is part of the proposal. Consequently, participation in a workshop is by personal invitation from Schloss Dagstuhl only.
